A wounded soldier at her doorstep. A secret beneath the floorboards.

Germany, World War Two. Jimmy O'Brien and Greta Müller must overcome a mountain of obstacles forcing them apart, while helping a young boy reunite with his mother.

With the war now threatening her safety, can Greta save the handsome GI, or will her act of charity lead to the discovery of a hidden past and the destruction of a young boy's world?

Stacia Kaywood's debut novel, 'Bathed In Moonlight', explores the chaos at the end of a hard-fought war, when those who survived struggle to rebuild the lives they once had, redefining who they now are while putting to rest the skeletons in their closets.

Bathed In Moonlight is a historical romance novel set in the final days of World War II and its aftermath. The story centers on Greta Müller, a German woman who has escaped a Nazi concentration camp while caring for a young boy, and Jimmy O’Brien, a wounded American GI who stumbles upon her remote hideaway. Together they navigate danger, secrets, loss, and the rebuilding of life and identity as war ends and peace begins.

Where do I start with this one? This is one of those books that will consume you from the moment you start reading. Within a single sitting (aside from usual adult/parenting time), I found myself crying, smiling, feeling utterly heartbroken, all while being unable to put the book down. I finished this in under 24 hours, not because I rushed, but because the story refused to let me go! Historical Romance, honestly? Has never been a genre I actively sought out. Before this, I had only read one other historical romance, this is the first one that I have read that is set during the Second World War. Despite that, this time period has always fascinated me. When I was in school, the only history topics that actually held my attention were the Tudors and WW2. There is something so incredibly raw, tragic and wholesome about that era, and this novel captures those emotions in a way that feels honest, respectful and like you are living with them at that time. What stood out to me the most was how the history was woven so seamlessly into the story. There is absolutely no overwhelming information dump, or pages just brimmed with war facts. Instead, the historical context unfolds itself slowly and naturally alongside the characters. As the plot progresses, we learn more about the world they are living in, all the dangers that they face and the secrets each character carries. The gradual reveal made the emotional impact even stronger.

Greta is an exceptional main character, she is strong, fearless, and fiercely protective, yet still deeply human and vulnerable. Her resilience in the face of unimaginable circumstances is inspiring and her emotional depth is second to none. I always connect with novels straight away if the characters are strongly written, and this is a perfect example. Jimmy, an injured American soldier who finds his way into her safe house, is equally compelling. At first, he appears fragile and broken, both physically and emotionally but as he begins to heal, layers of his character are revealed, and it becomes impossible not to fall in love with him. The character between Greta and Jimmy is beautifully written. It is tender, emotional and perfectly suited to the time and setting. It makes the reader reflect at how special relationships were back then, the only communication through letters, no instant phone calls etc. The connection felt earned, shaped by shared fear, trust and survival rather than a typical rushed romance novel.  I am a sucker for a slow burn, and Stacia wrote this perfectly to reflect the nature of their relationship which only adds to the intensity and emotional pay off.

We learn that Greta escaped from Auschwitz, which in itself represents one of the most horrific periods in history. This part of the story is written with immense care and sensitivity, yet it does not shy away from the raw truth of what that experience meant. The author strikes a careful balance between respect and honesty, allowing the reality of trauma to feel real. It serves as a powerful reminder that this history is not fictional, and it did really happen.

One quote that stood out to me deeply was this:

"There was no holding back anymore, no hiding behind feelings he didn't want to name or explore. This was it, love. For the first time in his life, he truly felt the dizzying splendour of love. And, she was his, she belonged to him and no one else. He lowered his mouth, his lips working over hers, his hands exploring every curve of her body."

This moment is meaningful because it represents far more than passion or romance. It shows Jimmy finally realising and allowing himself to feel something pure after so much pain, fear and loss. In a world that is shaped by war and survival, love becomes an act of defiance. This quote really captures the intensity of that realisation. The vulnerability of opening themselves to love when everything else has been taken away.

There are some difficult themes explored throughout the plot, including rape, abuse and death. These topics aren't treated lightly, nor are they included for shock value. Instead, they are handled with care and purpose, reflecting the harsh realities of the time whilst still prioritising the emotional wellbeing of the reader. Every difficult moment serves the story and the characters. The intimate scenes are also written beautifully and thoughtfully, adding depth rather than just a usual distraction. They strengthen their emotional bond and helps the story as a whole convey trust, healing and connection. The side characters deserve just as much praise, particularly Ezra, the young boy whose story completley broke my heart. Without spoiling the plot, he is an exceptional and intelligent child who has endured horrors that no child ever should. His presence in the story added such an emotional weight that stayed with me long after I actually finished reading. His journey made me cry more than once.

Overall, for a debut novel, I am impressed. The level of research required to portray this period with such accuracy and sensitivity is evident. The author's dedication to getting all of the details of history correct is outstanding and it is something she should be incredibly proud of. The story is powerful, heartbreaking and beautifully written, and I think it will always leave a lasting impression on me.
